Cool! I want one too! It's funny. We haven't even officially 'seen' our (hopefully) new place (We've gone out and poked around the land and peered in the windows) and V's already talking about using the south facing wall to make a solarium/greenhouse extension. HA! so much for him not being 'into' this. Judy
Hey MLMW, does your city ordinance allow chickens? Ours does but only if you have 10,000 sq ft, or ask your neighbours for permission which prohibits most people. I keep trying to pluck up the courage to ask mine, but somehow never do. I also think it might be unfair for us with so little space and our four dogs. I wouldn't want constantly scared chickens.
Mo, our city is currently in flux about the chickens. A few years ago they banned it when everyone was hysteric about avian flu. But then a few folks in town got chickens again and kept them illegally. The city has been fine with it until/unless a neighbor complained. Now however, we've got a lot of urban farmer crusaders who are rallying for city chickens to be legal (in our neighboring Ann Arbor, you can have 4 per house). No space restraints. 10,000 sq. ft. seems like an awful lot of space required! Our lot is only 12,500 sq ft total. We'll get our hens home regardless. No roosters in the city, just hens. We don't have dogs or cats anymore and we do have space for a small chicken run.
Sounds great and I am looking forward to hearing about your chicken exploits. I agree, 10,000 sq ft is a very large city lot which most people here in Phoenix don't have. Ah well, another dream for our move to Oregon! :)
I am an Urban Homesteader living on .29 acres in the city. Last year our family attempted to grow as much of our own food as possible, and what we could not grow (or raise), we bought from other local folks who could. What began as a challenge morphed into a lifestyle that in the end, has brought us closer together (often via canning) and saved us a lot of money. In the near future, we plan to add a new family member, a few laying hens and hopefully a small hoop house!
